Patti Scialfa, renowned member of the E Street Band and Bruce Springsteen’s wife, has recently opened up about her long and private battle with cancer.

At the September 8 premiere of Rock Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band during the Toronto International Film Festival, Scialfa revealed that she was diagnosed with multiple myeloma back in 2018. The disease, which significantly weakens the immune system, compelled her to make the tough choice to step back from touring alongside Springsteen and the band.

“This illness directly impacts my immune system, so I have to be very careful about my activities and surroundings,” Scialfa shared. “Every so often, I join Bruce and the band for a show or two, and it’s truly a joy for me. It’s a new chapter of my life, and I’m learning to embrace it.”

In a previous interview with Asbury Park Press, Scialfa elaborated on her decision to limit her involvement in Springsteen’s latest tour, which launched in February 2023. Instead of constantly being on the road, she chose to focus on personal priorities: completing her solo album and cherishing time with her granddaughter, Lily Springsteen, born in July 2022.

“With the band so well-rounded and strong, I didn’t feel like I was essential for every show,” Scialfa admitted. “After a few performances, I saw things running beautifully and knew I could take a step back without causing any disruption.”

The quieter time at home also allowed her to concentrate fully on finishing her album—a project that had been difficult to complete with Bruce’s constant studio work. “Bruce practically lives in the studio,” Scialfa said with a smile. “So having this time for myself gave me the focus I needed to bring my own music to life.”

Meanwhile, Bruce Springsteen himself has faced recent health setbacks. In September 2023, he paused his tour to undergo treatment for peptic ulcer disease, and in the summer of 2024, he had to cancel three scheduled performances due to vocal strain.

As Patti Scialfa continues her courageous fight against multiple myeloma, her determination and grace shine through. Our thoughts remain with her as she navigates this journey, a true testament to resilience and unwavering spirit.
